Common errors 1: Amoral vs. Immoral

Amoral: nonmoral = not being governed by moral laws, acting outside them 비도덕적인

Immoral: morally wrong = breaking the moral laws 부도덕한

Idiom 37: Ballpark figure

상황: 어떠한 일을 하시다보면 먼저 생각하는 예산치가 있을 것입니다. 예를 들어 집을 renovation할 경우에 어느 정도의 비용을 드는지를 알기 위해 견적을 뽑기도 하지요. 저 같은 경우도 어떠한 프로젝트를 하는데 있어서 proposal을 제출(submit)할 때 반드시 들어가야 할 것중의 하나가 원하는 추정치이죠. 이럴 때 많이 사용되는 말이 이 표현입니다.

ballpark figure = approximate amount within acceptable bound

When I asked my supervisor how much it would be to take the project, he gave me a ballpark figure.

Idiom 36: Miss a trick

상황: 사람을 만나다보면 언제나 빈틈이 없는 사람을 보곤 합니다. 매사에 준비성이 있고 무슨 일을 하는데 있어서 기회가 왔다 싶으면 놓치지 않죠. 이럴 때 쓰는 표현입니다. 부정문에서 사용됩니다.

not miss a trick = is alert and always able to take advantage of any situation 빈틈이 없다, 기회를 놓치지 않다
As soon as her boss left the building, she began to make personal calls. She doesn't miss a trick.

Idiom 35: Have a heart

상황: 미국생활을 하면서 느끼는 것은 미국사람들이 친절하기는 하지만 왠지 '인정'이란 것은 느낄 수가 없는 것 같더군요..저만 그런지.. 그래도 한국사람을 만나면 그래도 '인정'이 더 느껴지곤 합니다. 인정이 있다라고 표현할 때 쓰는 숙어입니다. 단순히 친절한 그 이상의 표현이라고 생각이 되네요.

have a heart = show compassion or kindness

He wouldn't even speak to to the homeless man, but I said, "Have a heart. How would you feel if people treated you so unkindly?"

Idiom 34: Wouldn't say boo to a goose

상황: 주위를 보시면 아주 부끄럼을 많이 타는 사람을 볼수가 있으실 것입니다. 아주 많이 부끄럼(수줍음)을 많이 타는 사람을 가리킬 때 쓰는 표현입니다.

wouldn't say boo to a goose = describing a person who is very quiet and shy

John is very timid: he wouldn't say boo to a goose.
